Emergency avalanche evacuation order issued in Anchorage suburb
Concerned for the "grave and immediate threat to the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens" of Anchorage suburb Eagle River, city mayor Dave Bronson has ordered their evacuation following a huge avalanche buried a road, with another imminent.
Snow up to 24m deep cut off access for around 100 homes in Alaska's largest city, leaving some without power, but apparently only half the snow in the "unstable slide zone" has collapsed down the mountainside.
Anchorage Municipal Manager Amy Demboski cited experts calling the avalanche so far, a "once-in-a-hundred-year event", adding helicopter-delivered dynamite to spark controlled pre-emptive avalanches were being deployed.

Deadly New Orleans Tornado Destroys Homes - Rips out Power
At least one person has been killed when the dark cloud tore through suburbs in New Orleans, its power laid bare as it flipped cars and blew off rooftops.
The tornado spawned from a deadly storm system which moved through Texas and Oklahoma on Monday, before moving into areas devasted by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.
Rescue services are still searching for people potentially trapped under rubble, with some homes totally demolished.
The US National Weather Service has warned more damaging weather has been forecast in the coming days.
Two earthquakes with magnitude 6.7 occurred yesterday in two different regions, Taiwan and the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, with only one hour difference in time.

Deadly Rains & Mudslides Strike Brazil AGAIN - month after hundred killed by freak floods
At least five people have been killed and four missing after heavy rains battered Brazil's city of Petropolis.
It comes a little over a month after landslides and flooding killed more than 200 people in a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.
